Responding to a steady stream of criticism over its efforts to curry favor with doctors, Big Pharma is putting a lid on some of the most visible practices. PhRMA, the drug-industry trade group, says says it’s banning some of the freebies that sales reps dole out to docs, including pens, mugs and logo-laden prescription pads. The move is part of a new, voluntary code of conduct that drugmakers will be encouraged to follow. PhRMA will ask companies to specify in writing that they have the policies in place.“Although our member companies have long been committed to responsible marketing of the life-enhancing and life-saving medicines they develop, we have heard the voices of policymakers, healthcare professionals and others telling us we can do better,” PhRMA CEO Billy Tauzin said in a news release.There are many such voices. Among them: the non-pizza loving Association of American Medical Colleges, academic-money focused Sen. Charles Grassley and sunshine states like Vermont and Minnesota.Still, this won’t put an end to the controversy. For one, it looks like pizza is still allowed. The code says sales reps won’t be able to provide restaurant meals to docs, but can still bring in sustenance to the office occasionally “in conjunction with informational presentations.”

Mugs PACE - Two teenagers were arrested late Tuesday after they tried to steal wine from a grocery store - and one pulled a knife on an employee who foiled them.Donald Stelly, 19, and Tanner Fincher, 17, each face charges for robbery with a weapon, petit theft and being minors in possession of alcohol.Just before midnight, deputies went to the Winn Dixie on Highway 90 after employees called 911. One said two white men entered the store with a backpack and stuffed two bottles of wine in it.That employee confronted them and grabbed the bag, lawmen said.The suspects began to run, but then Stelly pulled a knife and threatened to stab the employee before fleeing, leaving the backpack and wine behind.They sped away in a Chevrolet El Camino. Santa Rosa County sheriff's deputies stopped them soon after that.Fincher was taken to the Santa Rosa County Jail and then transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Pensacola. Stelly was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail, where he was held on a $51,000 bond

Mugs A year ago I asked students in a strategy class to think about whether Starbucks was going to be as successful in Australia as it had been in the United States. In the wake of Tuesday's sudden announcement that it is to close 61 of its 84 Australian stores and axe almost 700 jobs, I have been reflecting on what those students might have taken away from that class.Starbucks has been a great teaching case. It is an obvious example of a successful company, and unlike in the cases of a steel mill or a car plant, most students have a good understanding of these types of businesses, either as customers or as casual employees. I tend to use Starbucks as an example of a business that has been successful by adjusting its products to local market conditions.Starting as a small coffee shop in Seattle, Starbucks became a US-wide phenomenon by successfully "Americanising" the European coffee tradition. Starbucks prided itself on having created a "third" place in people's lives. Somewhere between home and work they could relax, and with its mega-mucho lattes and sweet syrups, they made "real" coffee palatable to people who had grown up on filter coffee and soft drinks.When they look at Starbucks, students tend to marvel at how rapidly the business expanded. Good students also quickly notice the limitations to the business model. Starbucks has always had a limited product line and has few opportunities to achieve extra revenue for existing customers. Once you have sold someone some coffee beans, a CD and a two-litre coffee, there isn't much more you can do for them and it is hard to shoo them away without ruining the image of the "third place".

On 31 July, North Wales Police, fire officers, Vosa and the Environment Agency Wales were called to the scene on the A5104 near Broughton, Flintshire. The trailer was discovered in the lay-by, carrying chemicals includingantifreeze, oil and paint. Although the agency said these were not"immediately harmful," someone was required to guard the siteovernight to protect the environment and the public. Identifyingmarks on the truck, such as the VPN plate had been removed,implying that the HGV was deliberately dumped. Lee Rawlinson, environment manager for the agency states: "It iscompletely unacceptable to dump chemicals like this. People have alegal responsibility to get rid of chemicals safely so they do notharm the countryside or people." According to an agency spokesman,a lot of forensic evidence was found in the tractor, which couldhelp track down the culprit.

To gainfurther insight, researchers examined the dynamics and binding ofcatechins through computer simulations and presented their work inan advanced article from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The researchers performed molecular dynamic simulations for sevenpopular catechins (Figure 1) and focused on molecular parameterslike hydrogen bonding, adsorption, absorption, molecularorientation, and presence of functional groups. They used anall-atom molecular representation for the catechins, a phospholipidmembrane, and water to calculate the atomic forces on each atom asthey interact with one another. Out of the seven catechins, three absorbed (C, EC, and EGCG) intothe cell membrane, while the other four adsorbed onto its surface.The membrane surface catechins remained flexible and could diffuseacross the surface by forming and breaking hydrogen bonds. However,the absorbed catechins had extremely limited mobility because theywere trapped within the bilayer.

The bill virtually eliminates lead in children's toys and bans sixtypes of chemicals, called phthalates, that have hormone-likeeffects. Lead can cause both brain damage and behavioral problemsin children. A number of animal studies and a few in humans havelinked phthalates to early puberty in girls, genital defects andreduced testosterone production in boys and impaired sperm qualityin men. The bill requires that all toys be tested for dangerous chemicalsbefore they're sold — a big change over the current practice,in which untested toys are sold and recalled if necessary, saysRachel Weintraub of the Consumer Federation of America. Outsidecompanies will perform the tests. The law also boosts the budget of the Consumer Product SafetyCommission from $80 million to $118 million in 2010 and $136million five years later. The commission will be required to set upa website where consumers can both register complaints and readreports posted by others.The American Chemistry Council, which represents industry, supportsstrengthening the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but opposesthe ban on phthalates, which it says are safe.
